PSEG Long Island Storm Update — Saturday, Dec. 24, 2022, 9:15 a.m.

  • Winter Storm Elliott’s heavy winds and driving rain toppled trees, tore down tree limbs, downed electric wires and knocked out power to 39,445 of its 1.1 million customers across Long Island and the Rockaways. Some areas had wind gusts of nearly 65 miles per hour. Below freezing temperatures and windy conditions remain across PSEG Long Island’s service territory.
  • As of 8:00 a.m., electric service crews have restored power to more than 98% of the 39,445 customers who lost power during the storm – that’s 38,754 customers re-energized.
  • The remaining 691 customers affected by the storm are expected to have power today.
  • Electric service crews worked around the clock in high winds and brutal cold, and will continue their work until every customer has power restored.
  • PSEG Long Island prepares year-round to maintain reliable service – even in extreme weather. By using stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment, the hardening efforts have led to fewer outages, which are shorter in duration. This storm is a good example of those efforts.
  • PSEG Long Island recognizes that being without power for any length of time is a hardship, especially during the holidays, and appreciates its customers’ patience and understanding during this extreme weather emergency. PSEG Long Island is grateful to its dedicated personnel working through this holiday weekend to get power back on safely and as quickly as possible.

Customer safety:

  • Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines. Immediately call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service at 800-490-0075, use the web chat feature at www.psegliny.com or call 911 to report a downed wire.
  • Electric current passes easily through water, so stay away from downed power lines and electrical wires, especially near water. Do not drive over – and do not stand near – downed power lines.
  • Downed lines are difficult to see in bad weather or standing water. If you encounter large pools of slush or standing water while driving, stop, back up and choose another path.
  • To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, do not run a gasoline-powered generator in a garage or other enclosed space.
