Elwood Conversion and Reinforcement

Reliability Projects

We're making upgrades to enhance our system's ability to withstand extreme weather and meet energy demands.

Project Specifics
PSEG Long Island is installing new underground and overhead distribution cable to meet the growing demand for electricity in the Northport and East Northport area. The project will utilize horizontal directional drilling to minimize the need to trench or otherwise disturb the roadway or properties. Temporary drill pits will be installed in some areas and limited trenching will be required to tie-in the new cable to existing equipment. Additionally, overhead lines and equipment will be upgraded in the area to meet current standards.

These upgrades will ensure that you and your neighbors receive safe, reliable electric power for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the project include new poles or pole replacements?
Yes.

New poles: New wood distribution poles will be added at the following locations:

  • 1 New pole on the West side of Ocean Avenue, South of Dogwood Road
  • 5 New poles on Dogwood Avenue and Goldenrod Avenue.

Pole Replacements: Along the overhead re-conductoring route, wood distribution poles will be replaced with similarly sized wood distribution poles at the following locations:

  • 14 pole replacements on Dogwood Avenue and Goldenrod Avenue, 1 pole replacement on the East side of Norwood Avenue across from Goldenrod Avenue.

Will there be tree trimming?

Yes. Trees growing near power lines significantly increase the chance of power outages and pose safety risks. As we expand and improve our electric circuits, we will trim trees, where necessary, following our utility best practice model (ANSI A300 standards as well as the Best Management Practices Tree Pruning publication): 8 feet to each side; 12 feet above; and 10 feet below the line.

Will there be any power outages?
PSEG Long Island does not anticipate any planned power outages related to this project. However, if the need for an outage arises, customers will be notified in advance.

Will there be any traffic interruptions?
We do anticipate some traffic and parking interruptions. To ensure traffic moves safely, PSEG Long Island and its contractor will provide cones, flaggers and signage at the work sites, as needed, to minimize interruptions. Major work around the school will be jointly coordinated and scheduled during holiday and off periods. School and local officials will be notified in advance regarding any traffic concerns.
