We're making upgrades to enhance our system's ability to withstand extreme weather and meet energy demands.

Project Overview

PSEG Long Island will install two new underground distribution cables and upgrade overhead distribution equipment in Far Rockaway. Specifically we will:

This project was completed in October 2021.

Underground
Two new underground cables will be installed to exit the Far Rockaway Substation on the northeast corner near the intersection of Enright Road and Dickens Street. The feeders will run:

  • East on Enright Road until Gipson Street
  • South on Gipson Street until Nameoke Avenue
  • East on Nameoke Avenue until Beach Channel Drive
  • South on Beach Channel Drive until Birdsall Avenue
  • East on Birdsall Avenue until Redfern Avenue
  • South on Redfern Avenue to just south of Dix Avenue

 
Overhead 
Beach 22nd Street: Upgrade overhead wire, replace wood distribution poles with new wood distribution poles, and upgrade equipment.

  • Along Beach 22nd Street between Mott Avenue and Cornaga Avenue, construction specialists will replace five wood poles that range from approximately 30 - 34 feet in height above grade with wood poles that are approximately 39 feet in height above grade.
  • Near the intersection of Birdsall Avenue and Redfern Avenue construction specialists will replace one wood pole that is approximately 30 feet in height above grade with a wood pole that is approximately 39 feet in height above grade.

 
Project Timeline
Construction is expected to begin in July and take about four months to complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the work hours?
    Crews are scheduled to work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Will there be tree trimming?
    Trees growing near power lines significantly increase the chance of power outages and pose safety risks. As we expand and improve our electric circuits, we will trim trees, where necessary, following our utility best practice model (ANSI A300 standards as well as the Best Management Practices Tree Pruning publication): 8 feet to each side; 12 feet above; and 10 feet below the line.
  • Will the project include new poles or pole replacements?
    Yes. The work will include approximately 6 pole replacements.
  • Will there be any power outages?
    We do not anticipate any power outages related to this project. In the event that a brief outage is required, all affected customers will be notified in advance of any power outage.
  • Will there be any traffic interruptions?
    There will be traffic disruptions along the project route. To ensure traffic moves safely, PSEG Long Island will provide cones, flagmen and signage at the work sites, as needed
