Project Specifics
PSEG Long Island is committed to delivering best-in-class system reliability by expanding electrical capacity to meet the needs of the communities it serves, today and in the future. Over the coming months, you may see workers making upgrades in your area. While this work is being performed, traffic and parking may be impacted along the route.
The improvements we are making in your area include:
- Upgrading electrical equipment at our substation located at the intersection of Beach Channel Drive and Rockaway Freeway. The project is needed to help support existing and future electrical demand in the area.
- Installing approximately 5,000 feet of new underground distribution cable along portions of Beach 102nd Street, Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and Rockaway Freeway.
- Installing and replacing equipment to help reduce the number of customers affected by an outage.
- Installing one new pole and replacing three wood distribution utility poles. Pole replacements will be of the same material, approximately 60 feet tall, and will be installed in the same general locations.
Overhead Project Route
Crews will replace and install poles along the following streets:
- Rockaway Beach Boulevard near the intersection of Beach 102nd Street
- Rockaway Freeway near the intersection of Beach 102nd Street
- Rockaway Freeway near Beach 96th Street
- Beach Channel Drive near Beach 97th Street
Underground Project Route
Crews will install underground distribution cable along the following streets:
- Rockaway Freeway between Beach 108th Street and Beach 102nd Street
- Beach 102nd Street between Rockaway Freeway and Rockaway Beach Boulevard
- Rockaway Beach Boulevard between Beach 102nd Street and Beach 96th Street
- Beach 96th Street between Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Rockaway Freeway
Project Timeline
Construction within the substation is expected to begin in December 2021 with an anticipated completion of August 2022. Work outside of the substation is expected to begin in March 2022.

- Will there be tree trimming?
Trees growing near power lines significantly increase the chance of power outages and pose safety risks. As we expand and improve our electric circuits, we will trim trees, where necessary, following our utility best practice model (ANSI A300 standards as well as the Best Management Practices Tree Pruning publication): 8 feet to each side; 12 feet above; and 10 feet below the line. - Will there be any power outages?
In the event that a brief outage is required, you will be notified in advance. - Will there be any traffic interruptions?
There will be minor traffic disruptions along the route. To ensure traffic moves safely, PSEG Long Island will provide cones, flaggers and signage at the work sites, as needed. - How can I get more information or leave feedback?
