Project Specifics

PSEG Long Island’s electric grid consists of three primary elements: electric transmission lines that carry high-voltage power from generation sources; substations that receive the electricity from the transmission lines and step it down to a lower voltage; and distribution lines that carry the lower-voltage electricity into our neighborhoods. Over the coming months, you will see workers strengthening the transmission lines. While this work is being performed, traffic and parking may be impacted along the route.

PSEG Long Island will be repairing and replacing existing infrastructure and upgrading transmission facilities located in Montauk to increase the operating voltage from 23kV to 33kV. As part of this project, eleven wood transmission poles will be replaced with new wood transmission poles of similar size and height that meet current storm hardening standards. These upgrades are necessary to keep pace with the growing demand for electricity on the East End.

Project Route
Work will take place along the following streets: Industrial Road between 2nd House Rd and Edgemere Street, Edgemere Street from Industrial Road to the traffic circle, and Montauk Point State Parkway (Route 27) from the traffic circle to the substation located just east of East Lake Drive

Project Timeline
Construction is expected to begin in early December with an anticipated completion date of June 2023. Crews will be working Monday through Friday from approximately 8am – 5pm.

• Will the project include new poles or pole replacements?
  Yes, 11 existing wood transmission poles will be replaced with similarly sized wood transmission poles at the following locations; two poles on Industrial Road, two poles on Edgemere Street and seven poles along Montauk Point State Parkway.
• Will there be tree trimming?
  Yes, trees growing near power lines significantly increase the chance of power outages and pose safety risks. As we expand and improve our electric circuits, we will trim trees, where necessary, following our utility best practice model (ANSI A300 standards as well as the Best Management Practices Tree Pruning publication).
• Will there be any power outages?
  PSEG Long Island does not anticipate any power outages associated with this project. However, if an outage is needed, all affected customers will be notified in advance.
• Will there be any traffic interruptions?
  We do anticipate some traffic interruptions. To ensure traffic moves safely, PSEG Long Island and its contractor will provide cones, flaggers and signage at the work sites, as needed, to minimize interruptions.
