Washers and Dryers

Washers and dryers are some of the largest energy users. Save by doing the following:

  • Try to do laundry on weekends when there are no Peak hours. On weekdays, run washers and dryers during Off-Peak hours: before 3 p.m. or after 7 p.m.
  • Wash full loads, but don’t overfill
  • Use shorter wash cycles when possible
  • If your machine has an adjustable load option use it for smaller loads
  • Wash with cold water
  • Line dry what you can instead of using your dryer
  • Clear your dryer’s lint filter after each load

Time-of-Day Smart Tip
: Start your washer after dinner and then dry your clothes at night or during overnight hours. Keep big loads of laundry for the weekends.

Electric Ovens and Stoves

The typical oven not only uses a lot of power, it adds extra heat that can make your air conditioning work harder in summer. So what can you do?

  • Using the barbecue is a great way to save energy and enjoy a delicious meal outdoors!
  • If you like to bake, prep at any time and then bake during off-peak hours.
  • Use smaller appliances like toaster ovens, microwaves and slow cookers instead of the oven -especially during Peak hours.

Time-of-Day Smart Tip:
Stagger the use of your oven and other large appliances, like the dishwasher or washing machine, to cut your energy consumption.

Dishwashers

A dishwasher consumes a significant amount of electricity and creates heat and humidity that can make your home feel warmer. An easy shift is to start the dishwasher before you go to bed. You can also:

  • Set dishwasher built-in timer to Off-Peak hours
  • Wash full loads
  • Use the air-dry setting
  • In summer, wash during cooler hours of the day
  • Pre-rinse heavily soiled dishes to prevent the need for a second cycle

Time-of-Day Smart Tip:
Get in the habit of starting your dishwasher at the end of the day. If you are in the market for a new appliance, consider ENERGY STAR appliances and products and be sure to take advantage of our rebates!

Electronics

Depending on your home, electronics like TVs, video game consoles, cable boxes and computers can make up between 5% and 10% of your overall energy costs. It’s not realistic to use electronics only during Off-Peak hours, but here are some ideas to lower the cost.

  • Turn off electronic devices when you aren’t using them, especially during the Peak hours from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.
  • Consider an ENERGY STAR® certified TV, which are about 25% more energy efficient than conventional models.
  • Lower computer screen brightness to save energy. It can also help prevent eyestrain.
  • Keep in mind that screen savers do not save energy – use sleep mode instead.
  • Plug devices like your TV, game console, cable box and home theater components into an advanced power strip. It can detect when a device is not in use, cut power and save energy. They also offer surge protection, and some have timers.
