PSEG Long Island is committed to delivering best-in-class reliability by expanding electrical capacity to meet the needs of the communities it serves, today and in the future. PSEG Long Island’s electrical grid consists of three primary elements: Electric transmission lines that carry high-voltage power from generation sources; substations that receive the electricity from the transmission lines and step it down to a lower voltage; and distribution lines that carry the lower-voltage electricity into our neighborhoods.

Recent engineering studies and analysis by PSEG Long Island have concluded that upgrades to the Bridgehampton Substation are needed to support increased load growth that is forecasted to exceed the capacity of the Substation. The proposed Substation upgrades are necessary to provide an adequate and reliable power supply to the surrounding area.

Project Scope

Bridgehampton Substation
PSEG Long Island will be performing work at the existing Bridgehampton Substation. The proposed project includes:

• Installation of one new additional transformer bank with one new half line up switchgear
• Installation of two double circuit breakers and several switching assemblies
• Upgrades and modifications to the existing bus work
• Partial reconfiguration of four existing transmission circuits with partial relocation from overhead to underground installation with two new riser poles
• Removal of several existing wood transmission poles, replacement of two existing wood transmission poles, and installation of two new wood transmission riser poles

 
Transmission Work
Installation of new substation equipment, as well as the partial reconfiguration of four existing transmission circuits outside of the fenced substation area but still on PSEG Long Island property.

Location of the site or right-of-way:
Work will be done at the existing Bridgehampton Substation. The Substation is located on the western side of Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike approximately 2,500 feet north of Scuttle Hole Road.

Description of the utility transmission facilities to be built:
New equipment to be installed at the Substation include one new transformer bank, one new half line up switchgear, two double circuit breakers, several switching assemblies, and associated bus work modifications.

Portions of four transmission circuits will be reconfigured to connect to the Substation through the new equipment installations. Approximately 250 linear feet of overhead transmission wire will be relocated from overhead to underground. To accommodate these reconfigurations, approximately 10 existing wood transmission poles will be removed, two existing wood transmission poles will be replaced with new wood transmission poles, and two new wood transmission riser poles will be installed. New poles will stand no more than 10 feet taller than existing poles and infrastructure in the immediate vicinity.

• Why does PSEG Long Island need to perform this work?

• Were alternative overhead transmission line routes were assessed?
  No alternative was assessed.
• Why is the proposed location best suited for the facility?
  Installation of new Substation equipment and utility poles will occur within and in the immediate vicinity of the existing Substation grounds where existing electrical infrastructure that is comparable in both height and appearance currently exists.
• What is the project description of the distribution work?
  There is no distribution component.
• What is the overall timeline for the project?
  Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks and be completed by June 2023.
• What are the work hours?
  Crews will work Monday – Friday, 7 am-5 pm. Occasional and limited weekend work may occur as needed.
• Will there be tree trimming?
  Trees growing near power lines significantly increase the chance of power outages and pose safety risks. As we expand and improve our electric circuits, we will trim trees, where necessary, following our utility best practice model (ANSI A300 standards as well as the Best Management Practices Tree Pruning publication): 8 feet to each side; 12 feet above; and 10 feet below the line.
• Will there be any power outages?
  PSEG Long Island does not anticipate any power outages associated with this project. However, if the need for an outage occurs, customers will be notified in advance.
• Will there be any traffic interruptions?
  There will be no traffic disruptions as all construction will happen within the vicinity of the existing Bridgehampton Substation.
